Article: When Pepper Was Worth More Than Gold

When Pepper Was Worth More Than Gold

When Pepper Was Worth More Than Gold

When Pepper Was Worth More Than Gold

Imagine yourself at a supermarket checkout, ready to pay for your groceries with a handful of pepper and a few cinnamon sticks. Absurd, isn't it? However, if we went back a few centuries in the past, this scene would have been an everyday reality.

Spices are not just those little jars that clutter our kitchen shelves and which, let's be honest, always seem to disappear when we need them. In the Middle Ages, they were the equivalent of today's Bitcoin!

Paying in spices: an exotic wealth

The expression "pay in spices" has its roots in a time when these products were more precious than gold. Imported at great expense from distant lands like Asia, spices were prized not only for enhancing the flavours of dishes, but also for their medicinal virtues. And of course, they were used to impress guests at banquets.

But what made these spices so precious? Rarity, of course. At a time when trade routes were long and perilous, every grain of pepper or sliver of cinnamon represented a true treasure. These exotic products, with enigmatic aromas and multiple uses, were the stars of medieval markets.

    Spices, luxury currency

When it came to making a deal or signing a treaty, nothing was better than doing it with the "bling-bling" of the time: pepper, cinnamon or even saffron. These exchanges were much more than a simple economic transaction; they represented a status, a social distinction.

The value of spices was such that they were sometimes equivalent to royal rewards. It was even possible to pay rent or debts with spices. A practice that may seem strange to us today, but which testifies to the cultural and economic importance of these products at the time.

    Back to reality

The next time you pull out your credit card to pay for your purchases, take a moment to imagine those ancient times when a handful of spices could be enough. And if the price of saffron seems exorbitant to you, remember: it could have been your monthly rent!

What if paying in spices was still relevant? Imagine the unusual situations at the checkout: “Sorry, sir, but your purse contains too much turmeric. We have to give you some nutmeg!”

    A spicy escape

Spices have the power to take us on a journey, whether through their captivating aromas or their fascinating history. They were once symbols of wealth and now, they continue to add depth to our dishes and our lives.

So, don't forget: salt in moderation, but spice generously!
