The Origin of Tea: A Journey through Time and Continents!

Welcome to the wonderful world of tea, this deliciously comforting drink that has captured the hearts of millions of people around the world. But where does this wonderful potion come from? Make yourself comfortable with your favourite cup, because we're going to tell you the story of the origin of tea…

Did you know that tea is the second most consumed drink in the world, just after water? Let's go back in time to discover the beginnings of this infusion that warms hearts and enlivens conversations.

Our journey begins in China, more than 5,000 years ago. According to an amusing legend, Emperor Shen Nong, a great lover of hot drinks, boiled water under a tree to hydrate himself. One day, a light breeze caused some leaves to fall into its warm water, colouring it a green hue. Curious, he tasted the mixture by accident and was pleasantly surprised by its delicious and soothing taste. Thus was born the first cup of tea and the first accidental tasting session!

From China, the legend of tea spread across borders, gaining popularity. But it was not until the 7th century that tea appeared in Japan, thanks to a Buddhist monk named Eichū. One day, tired from a long day of meditation, he decided to rest under a tree and fell asleep. When he woke up, he felt refreshed and energized by the drink produced by the leaves that had fallen from the tree. The word spread like wildfire in Japanese monasteries, and tea soon became an essential practice in Japanese culture.

Over time, tea also spread to India. But how did this hot drink arrive in this country so far from China and Japan? Hmm, let me tell you a spicy little anecdote! In the 9th century, the Indian monk Bodhidharma, on his way to China to spread Buddhism, decided to meditate in a cave for nine long years. Consumed by sleep, he ends up dozing. Dissatisfied with his weakness, he cut off his eyelids and threw them to the ground. Immediately, tea plants sprouted where his eyelids touched the earth! And this is how India began to produce tea, paying homage to this monk with “terribly” useful eyelids!

This is how this wonderful drink that is tea has crossed the ages, conquered entire civilizations and carved out a special place for itself in our daily lives. Fascinating legends accompany his journey through time and continents. So, next time you sip your cup of tea, think about the incredible stories behind each sip.
