Tuna Vindaye
Tuna Vindaye
What is Vindaye?
Tuna vindaye is a very popular Mauritian dish, which has its origins in Indian cuisine. The word "vindaye" comes from the Hindi term "vindaloo", which originally refers to a dish of meat marinated with vinegar and spices, very famous in the Goa region of India. However, the Mauritian version of vindaye has adapted to the local products and taste preferences of the island, giving rise to a unique recipe that stands out from its Indian cousin.
The tuna vindaye recipe has been adapted over time to use ingredients available locally in Mauritius.
It is often served with rice or bread, making it a complete meal. Over time, this recipe crossed the borders of Mauritius to gain popularity in other regions, notably Reunion and parts of the Indian Ocean, where it was adopted and adapted to local tastes.
Tuna vindaye perfectly illustrates the way in which Mauritian cuisine has been able to integrate foreign influences while adapting them to its own island context, creating unique dishes that tell the story of the island through their flavours.
The proposed recipe is certainly simplified but no less delicious! Thanks to our new Vindaye mixture make it in no time!
Ingredients to make your Vindaye:
500g of firm fish (such as tuna, swordfish, or marlin)
Vegetable oil
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 Tbsp of Vindaye mix
Salt to taste
Water
Rinse the tuna, cut it into medium pieces, lightly salt. In a pan, heat a little oil and cook the pieces of fish until golden brown on each side. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
Add a little more oil if necessary, and fry the sliced onions until the onions become translucent.
In the same pan, add the Vindaye mixture and cook for a minute to release the aromas.
Add a little water to create a light sauce. Leave to simmer for a few minutes.
Return the fish pieces to the pan. Mix gently to coat the fish with the sauce. Cook over low heat for a few minutes so that the flavours mix well.
Taste and adjust salt to taste. Vindaye is best when it has had time to rest, allowing the flavours to fully develop.
Accompany it with rice and enjoy your meal!
