How to use fenugreek in cooking
Fenugreek seeds can be toasted and ground for spice blends such as Indian masala, or used whole in pickles and curries. Ground fenugreek flavours sauces, breads and vegetable dishes, offering a characteristic taste reminiscent of maple syrup. Fresh or dried fenugreek leaves are also delicious, adding a new dimension to salads, soups and slow-cooked dishes.
The history of fenugreek
Fenugreek’s history goes back to ancient Egypt, where it was used as a spice and medicine, and even in mummification. Traces have been found in tombs dating to 1500 BC. From there, its use spread to India and the Middle East, where it became a cornerstone of cooking and traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. Its reputation later reached Europe, where it was adopted as a culinary ingredient.
