A little history
The blueberry is a small, dark red fruit with a sweet, tangy flavour that grows on low bushes in temperate and Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Blueberries have a long history of culinary and medicinal use dating back to antiquity.
Indigenous Americans used blueberries as food, eating them fresh or dried. Europeans discovered blueberries in the Middle Ages but took time to cultivate them, preferring to gather them in the wild.
In the 19th century, blueberries began to be grown commercially in Europe, particularly in France and Germany. In North America, commercial blueberry cultivation began in the early 20th century, especially in the states of Maine and Michigan.
Blueberries have grown in popularity over time, largely thanks to their delicious taste. Today, they are widely used in cooking, particularly in desserts, jams and smoothies, as well as in wine and liqueur production.
